Rhodena (Cronk) Finlay
My 4-H journey began in 1957 when my older sister joined the Saanich 4-H Holstein Calf Club. I was too young to join so I was considered a pre-clubber. This was long before Cloverbuds. At 10 I was able to join and be a “real” member in the Saanich 4-H Goat Club led by Kathleen Maule. In 1964 with my mom’s help the Saanich 4-H Sheep Club (now Saanich 4-H Lamb) started and I was excited to try something new, the lamb project. I completed my 4-H career as a member in 1967. For a number of years I was an assistant leader in South Saanich 4-H Home Arts club where my mom was leader.
Several years later I was approached by Mrs. Maule with a request to start a horse club, in 1975 Saanich 4-H Horse club was formed. Since then with several changes of course I have stayed involved through Saanich Peninsula 4-H Beef & Swine assistant leader then A leader for 17 years. Our move to Spallumcheen B C finds me in my 15th year as leader of Okanagan Shuswap 4-H Lamb Club.
4-H has had a large impact on my life. It was a learning experience as a member but even more so as a leader. The youth that I have had the pleasure of working with have been amazing. To have a small part in their lives and to see the success that they have had is the best reward. Members can teach us so much and we are always learning together.
A lot has changed over the years. The core values of the 4-H program remain the same. “Learn to do by doing”, achieve your personal best and have fun along the way. Make friends and take opportunities to learn new skills, accept challenges and enjoy the friendships that will last a lifetime.
